I would not be surprised to learn the subsidy seekers such as Warren Buffett are behind the big offshore wind push, perhaps they are concerned about the possibility of the subsidies ending. Here's one example of a well-heeled elite who admitted circa 2014 he is on the gravy train at taxpayer expense. (Buffett's father was a four-term U.S. Representative from Nebraska.) Multi-billionaire Warren Buffett explained the rationale for solar and wind generation in 2014:

"For example, on wind energy, we get a tax credit if we build a lot of wind farms. That's the only reason to build them. They don't make sense without the tax credit."

There is a big push for experimental floating offshore wind off the California central coast. The nonprofit REACT Alliance is fighting these harmful floating boondoggles. See https://www.reactalliance.org/ for details.

You just need to look internationally to see offshore wind is the fastest growing industry on the planet.

The U.S. is late to the game and slow to adapt concerning offshore.

Concessions are being bid with companies paying millions to participate. The projects are not subsidized.

The newest 15MW turbines may not turn all the time, but offshore it’s most of the time and the free fuel is over $20,000 a day if you use todays market price for coal or natgas.

No transportation or storage required.

Are there problems to overcome?

Certainly.

Will the economics make investing in offshore wind sustainable? Well, if you cast your eye across the globe, and include the latest announcements from the U.S., it’s hard to believe (for me at least) that many international players are wrong.

Talk about having the wind taken out of your sails! As you outline, it definitely sounds like quality assurance was sacrificed to get to market quickly.
