“A new bipartisan bill speeds up the timeline for building new nuclear reactors in Wisconsin, which state leaders say will be key to powering new data centers.”
Coming to save the day, in many ways, is the Small Modular Reactor; from 1 to 300 MW per unit. All of the big players like Westinghouse and Toshiba, as well as startups, are investing in them. Some don't need any water, or burn nuclear waste for fuel. They can be built in situ, or mass produced in a factory and transported to where needed. One of the biggest advantages is they can be built adjacent to what they power, so no grid connection or long transmission lines are needed. Build one right on the data center's property and plug in more as the data center grows. The first will be coming on line in the Western World by the end of this decade; before the plans and permissions are complete for the new 'old style' reactors.
So, they're going to have a bunch of bureaucrats figuring out what part of the state should be a sacrifice area. What are these people thinking? If AI requires nukes, I'm against it. I think the AI folks really ought to think twice about that. And so should Rep. Subeck. She just lost my vote.
