The basic chemistry shows when methane (CH4) is burned, the carbon dioxide intensity per unit of energy released is about half that of burning coal. Since 2010, that is the basis for the U.S. conversion from coal-fired to natural gas fired generation. Howarth's "study" is completely at odds with the basic chemistry. The bonus is that burning natural gas doesn't create the mountains of ash that burning coal produces. The coal ash mountains leach toxic substances like arsenic into ground water. Please search using the phrase "Toll from Coal" to review the Clean Air Task Force's research.
