This is an excellent article, but a clarification is needed as to why the Canadian government owns the pipeline. When Kinder Morgan Inc. owned the pipeline they spent a number of years meeting all of the regulations and withstanding a number of anti pipeline lawsuits by environmental groups. Having met all environment regulations, the pipeline's construction was given a green light by the government. The only thing in the way were more of the the seemingly never ending lawsuits regarding the smallest things, like the pipeline's crossing of a particular creek which had already received approval. The lawsuits were largely funded by foreign interests such as the George Soros funded Tides Foundation. The obvious plan was to keep Kinder Morgan Inc. tied up in court until they gave up on building the pipeline. A very public feud was growing between pro and anti pipeline groups and mass protests were increasing in size and animosity. A loose similarity can be drawn to the pro Palestinian vs pro Israeli protests. The government's solution was to purchase the Trans Mountain Pipeline from Kinder Morgan at a bargain price and put the pipeline on the shelf. Once the public outcries became silent the government proceeded to go ahead with building the pipeline. The government did things in such a way that the anti pipeline protests could not outspend the new pipeline owners, who also controlled the environmental regulatory agencies. The end result we are seeing is that the pipeline has been built and is in operation, but after years of delay and ballooning costs. Our taxes at work.
